Strap in, buddy – or rather: tighten your gloves, flip down your visor, and get ready for an encounter with the holy grail of the Maritime Alps. If the Stelvio Pass is a wild carnival, then the Col d’Izoard is a magnificent cathedral of rock and freedom. Here’s my love letter to the “King of the Hautes-Alpes,” written with a bit of tire tread and a whole lot of heart: The Izoard: Where Asphalt Meets Stardust If you start from Briançon, you might think, “Quite nice here, lovely larch forests, flowing curves.” But just you wait until you leave the tree line behind. The Izoard isn't just a pass you ride; the Izoard is a production. 1. The Casse Déserte: Your Rendezvous on Mars Suddenly, the world breaks open. You round a bend and – BAM! – you’ve landed on the moon. Welcome to the Casse Déserte. This isn't just a pile of rubble; it's a surreal sculpture gallery of weathered limestone. Yellow-red rock towers rise like petrified giants from the scree, and you're right in the middle of it on a ribbon of perfect asphalt. Honestly, every time I feel the need to check if there's still oxygen under my helmet, that's how unreal it looks here. You expect a rover to roll around the corner at any moment – but instead, it's you, letting the sound of your V-twin or inline-four echo against the rock faces. Goosebumps guaranteed! 2. The Geography of Happiness (at 2,360 meters) The Altitude: At 2,360 meters, it's no small fry. Up here, there's always a wind blowing that smells of adventure and freedom. The Route: From Briançon in the north to Guillestre in the south, nearly 30 kilometers of pure motorcycle ecstasy await you. The Curves: The north side is a flowing curve dream through the forest, while the south side is more technical, tighter, and offers that one moment when you stand at the memorial column at the top and gaze into the depths. 3. The Spirit of Legends You share this pass with the ghosts of cycling gods. Coppi and Bobet suffered here – I always pause briefly at the famous memorial plaque in the Casse Déserte. Respect to the guys who pedal up here without an engine! But honestly: with 100 horsepower under your rear, grinning is a lot more fun than gasping. Why you'll love the Izoard: Grip Level: The surface is often so grippy that you feel like your tires have suction cups. Play of Light: Ride it in the late afternoon. When the low sun bathes the rocks of the Casse Déserte in glowing orange, you’ll want nothing more than to leave your bike right there and move in. The Flow: There's no pass that has such a majestic rhythm. It's not a fight against the road; it's a dance. My Conclusion: The Col d’Izoard is a must-do for anyone who doesn't just use their motorcycle for grocery runs. It's solitary, it's wild, and it's damn sexy. A Little Tip Between Us: When you arrive down in Guillestre, turn right around and ride it again in the other direction. You simply can't get enough of this lunar landscape!
