Hold tight to your handlebars for a moment and imagine that the good Lord had a penchant for red lipstick and spectacular earthworks. That's exactly how it feels when you nudge your front wheel into the Gorges de Daluis. Forget the eternal Alpine grey – here you're riding through a postcard that was exported directly from the Wild West to Southern France. Here's my declaration of love to the "Colorado Niçois": Gorges de Daluis: The Ride on the Red Blade If you come from the north (Guillaumes) and let yourself drift south, something magical happens: the rock suddenly turns blood red. We're talking about Pélite schist that glows so intensely you'll wonder if someone secretly cranked up your reality's saturation slider to 100%. 1. One-Way Street Bliss (Tunnel Roulette) The genius for us bikers: The road (D2202) here is a technical masterpiece. While cars often sweat in the narrow passages, we've got the fat grin all to ourselves. The trick: Many of the tiny tunnels are one-way. While oncoming traffic curves around the rock outside, you blast through the short tubes. That means: visor up, enjoy the sound, and no fear of the Dutch caravan that would otherwise steal your ideal line. 2. The Abyss as a Constant Pillion To your left, it plunges almost vertically down into the depths, where the Var River has carved its way like a silver thread through the red stone. The gorge is up to 300 meters deep. It's narrow, it's wild, and it smells of thyme and warm asphalt. 3. The "Pont de la Mariée" – A Place for Wobbly Knees In the middle of the gorge, you'll encounter the legendary Pont de la Mariée. A bridge suspended so high above the abyss that even the most hardened riders catch their breath looking down. In the past, a tram ran here (yes, seriously!), today bungee jumpers leap into the void. A quick stop, let the engine crackle, and breathe in the panorama – it's mandatory. Why this gorge will steal your heart: The Color: This deep wine red contrasting with the deep blue sky of Provence and the vibrant green water of the Var – that's biker fantasy at its finest. The Grip: The asphalt is usually wonderfully grippy, but beware: in the shadows of the tunnels, it can sometimes be damp. The Combination: You can perfectly combine the Gorges de Daluis with the neighboring Gorges du Cians. It's like a double feature at the cinema, only with more lean angle. My Tip for the Perfect Run: Ride the gorge in the late afternoon when the sun is low. That's when the red rocks start to glow as if they have a life of their own. It's almost spiritual – until you engage first gear again and aim for the next curve.
